51% of glaucoma patients significantly lose their sight before diagnosis. HAC'S Glaucoma Masterclass will boost your knowledge and expertise, and improve your capability to screen, detect and co-manage glaucoma.

Course Structure

3 days of online studies (via Zoom) and 15 hours of asynchronous content.

Topics Covered

  • Classification & Staging of glaucoma, considering individual risk factors.
  • Co-management Strategies: When to refer? How to co-manage?
  • Advanced assessment methods based on imaging of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer (OCT, BIO, and more).
  • Master the assessment and interpretation of the visual field in optometric practice.
  • Explore the application and interpretation of Optical Coherence Tomography.
  • Understand and manage ocular hypertension effectively.
  • Acquire valuable insights in evaluating and treating glaucoma patients.

Instructors

Prof. Simon Barnard – Main Course Instructor:

 

Prof. Simon Barnard is an optometrist with a Ph.D. in the topic of eye movements. He is a Fellow of the College of Optometrists, American Academy of Optometry and European Academy of Optometry. He is Director of Ocular Medicine at the Institute of Optometry in London and Chairman of the Scope of Practice Committee of the European Council of Optometry and Optics. Professor Barnard has published over 30 clinical papers and is the Co-Editor and Author of the book, Paediatric Eye Care. He is also the co-inventor of the Volk Eye Check.

 

Dr. James Thimons – Guest Lecturer

 

Dr. Thimons is a graduate of Ohio State University College of Optometry. He served as the first Director of The Glaucoma Institute and later co- founded the Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut and the National Glaucoma Society. Dr. Thimons has received numerous awards for his service and has over 200 hundred publications in Glaucoma, Dry Eye, Cornea and External Disease, and Refractive Surgery and New Technologies.

He was inducted into the Optometry Hall of Fame in 2005 and has recently served as President, Connecticut Association of Optometrists.

 

Dr. Jan P.G. Bergmanson – Guest Lecturer

 

Jan PG Bergmanson, OD, PhD, PhD h.c., DSc, FCOptom, FAAO, FSLS, Brien A. Holden Professor of Optometry at University of Houston College of Optometry, founding Director of Texas Eye Research and Technology Center, licensed in Texas as a Therapeutic Optometrist and Optometric Glaucoma Specialist. He is a Life Foundation Fellow of The College of Optometrists, United Kingdom, Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and Diplomate in the Cornea, Contact Lens and Refractive Technologies Section, Fellow of Scleral Lens Education Society and Lifetime Honorary member of the Swedish and Dutch Optometric Associations. Scholarship includes 163 publications, 9 book chapters, one text in its 31st edition, and one patent.

 

Ms. Sally Ameen – Guest Lecturer

Ms Sally Ameen is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in glaucoma, cataract surgery and emergency ophthalmology. Amongst other roles, Ms Ameen is the Deputy Division Director for Quality & Safety, Surgery and Cancer Division at Imperial NHS Trust. The role demonstrates her commitment to ensure she is always at the forefront of best practice medicine. Her passion for education continued into her consultant post, last year awarded Silver Scalpel Award after being nominated by the trainee at the Western Eye Hospital as the best surgical trainer. She is also the Secretary for the Ophthalmic division of the Royal Society of Medicine and continues to be involved in both chairing and organising educational events. She has presented her work at several meetings, published in peer reviewed journals and has written 2 book chapters. She continues to be actively involved in research both within her hospital and in larger national trials.

 

Dr. Joseph Zelefsky, MD - Guest Lecturer

Dr. Zelefsky graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NY in 2003. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at NYU, followed by a glaucoma fellowship at NY Eye and Ear Infirmary with Drs. Robert Ritch, Jeffrey Liebmann, and Celso Tello.

Currently, Dr. Zelefsky serves as the Chief of Ophthalmology at NYC H+H/Lincoln.

Mr. Daniel Adler - Guest Lecturer

Mr. Daniel Adler graduated from his optometry studies at Hadassah Academic College and joined the department faculty.

After moving to Australia, he completed his master's studies at the University of Melbourne, specializing in retinal functions.

Mr. Adler attended a completion track at the University of New South Wales and was certified to use therapeutic machinery.
