Scientific Writing and Research Ethics

2 credits (3 ECTS Credits)

Introduction

The course will help students to understand the principles of scientific writing, different types of scientific papers, the process of writing and publishing research papers, critiquing research papers, and practical writing skills. In addition, ethics in research will be discussed.

Course Structure

Online classes that include active learning, group work, and the submission of written assignments.

Learning Outcomes

  1. On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
  2. Present and explain the structure of a scientific article in all its parts.
  3. Describe and plan clinical research (including choice of research methods and presentation of hypothesis)
  4. Perform analysis and describe research results verbally and graphically
  5. Write a research proposal
  6. Describe the correlation between research aim, research methodology and research results and conclusions


Topics Covered

  • Scientific writing and the importance of scientific publication.
  • What is a scientific article. IMRAD, types of publications. Impact Factor. How to order the authors list. Who is considered an author of an article.
  • The initial writing procedure
  • Structure of the scientific article. Introduction, materials and methods, results, figures and tables, discussion, references-quotes of literature, acknowledgements and appendices.
  • Research proposal - structure and format.
  • Basic and advanced functions in Excel including - figures, analysis of results, statistics, tables
  • Research Results- how to write scientific results, how to present the results, the meaning of the results, writing conclusions from combining results and statistical analysis
  • Understanding the connection between research aim, research methodology, research results and research conclusions by practicing and writing assignments
  • Ethics in writing, ownership of data
  • Ethics and scientific integrity. Ethical Issues in Medical Research, Helsinki Declaration, Belmont Document, Ethical Regulations, Principles in Medical Research, Patient Selection, Informed Consent, Ethical Committee, Child Research.

Assessment

Attendance: Students are required to attend at least 80% of the classes, and must complete all tasks and assignments.

Evaluation:

This 14-week course on Scientific Writing and Research Ethics offers international master's
degree students a comprehensive and interactive learning experience in the fields of scientific
writing and ethical research conduct. Throughout the course, students will develop essential skills
such as crafting research papers, conducting literature reviews, navigating the publication process,
and engaging in peer review. With a strong focus on real-world applications, students will also
explore critical topics in research ethics, including authorship, plagiarism, and responsible research
practices. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and abilities
needed to excel in academic writing, contribute ethically to the scientific community, and produce
high-quality research outputs.
